Is Your Heart Getting Enough of
This Magical Nutrient?

Want to lower your risk of a fatal heart attack and lose a few pounds? Eat more fiber. 

Findings from the Nurses? Health Study show that women who ate an average of 23 grams   of fiber daily had a 47 percent lower risk of major coronary events, including fatal heart attacks.  

 

Fiber also reduces the risk of colon cancer and acts like a sponge that binds up the fat we eat and pushes it through the body.
 

One of the best high fiber foods is beans?nature?s true super food. James Anderson, M.D., at the University of Kentucky, regularly prescribes a cup of navy or pinto beans to his patients each day.

 

I personally follow this prescription to the letter. My wife cooks up a large batch in the crock-pot every couple of weeks, scoops them in to small containers and sticks them in the freezer.


Dr. Anderson has documented that this prescription will cause cholesterol levels to sink by an average of 19%. Moreover, legumes are marvelous regulators of insulin. Diabetics, by following Dr. Anderson?s bean prescription, cut their insulin needs by up to 38 percent.


Beans will also regulate the colon, prevent or cure constipation, and they counteract cancer-causing compounds in the intestine.

 

Beans are low on the glycemic index and provide a steady even flow of blood sugar and keep hunger pangs at bay.


Eating beans and other legumes such as peas and lentils has also been linked to longevity. By including a helping a few times a week, you can add quality years to your life.


Eating beans causes gas in many people, but the more often you eat legumes the less likely you will suffer discomfort.  Proper soaking rids beans of most of their gas-producing potential.


There are several varieties of beans but my personal favorites are navy (small white), black and pinto (used in chili.) 

 

Remember this little ditty?  Beans, beans, the musical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot. The more you toot, the better you feel. So eat your beans with every meal!
