Exercises for Love Handles
That May Surprise You.

Gene Millen, Author - Revised 5/11/15

How to get the results you've been looking for.

Gene Millen, Heart Health CoachI'm Gene Millen, your host on this website. After my six-way heart bypass operation in 1990 my wife Bernie and I I opened the Vital Life Center, a health and wellness club designed for the needs of the "over 40 crowd.

During our eleven years of operation one of the most frequent questions we received from clients (as they affectionately caressed their paunch) was ""What exercises for love handles should I do?"
As we mature two truths become self evident...the ease of acquiring excess poundage around our middle and the difficulty of losing it.

If I was honest I had to advise them that losing surplus body from around our middle is a challenge...but it can be accomplished by using the right strategy.

It's true that you can add muscle if you do enough crunches, but contrary to our hopes (and prayers) "spot reducing" just doesn't work.
For our hours of hard work we can build very strong muscles around our stomach and waist but won't end up with "six pack abs", just strong muscles under a stubborn layer of body fat.
It is a common belief that cardio exercise for love handles is the answer. "If I just run on the treadmill for a hours maybe I can sweat it off."
Nope. And too much cardio, believe or not, is actually bad for your heart.

Dr. Al SearsDr. Al Sears, advises us that long-duration exercise isn't natural. One of Dr. Sears' insights into how the human heart functions is the fact that the best cardio exercise is not endurance training.

He says, "Heart attacks don't happen because your heart lacks endurance. They happen during times of stress, when your heart needs more energy and pumping capacity, but doesn't have it."
""The trouble with endurance exercise and jogging is that low intensity for long periods of time causes our bodies to store fat. Once you pass the 15 to 20 minute mark, you start burning fat during exercise."
"This sounds like a good idea but our body just doesn't work this way. Low intensity endurance exercise tells your body you need fat to burn as fuel during exercise.
As a result, your body will make and store more fat to prepare for your next run or aerobic workout -- a never-ending cycle making it impossible to get rid of that stubborn fat that never seems to go away.

"Then I'll just go on a diet to lose my love handles"

I recall asking one of our new clients if she had ever been on a diet. She said with a sigh, "All of them. I must have lost a thousand pounds."

Is there a "secret formula" of exercises for love handles?

New research about how our body works has revealed how we can supercharge our sluggish metabolism and win the fat battle of the bulge.

And the good news is that you don't have to give up all of your favorite foods, count calories or spend hours in the fitness center.
You may, however, have to unlearn a few things you thought you knew about the best foods to eat and the right kind of exercise to get rid of the stubborn love handles and pot bellies.

Stanford gerontologist Walter Bortz, author of The Roadmap to 100 and We Live Too Short and Die Too Long, advised us how your heart and exercise work together.

Dr. Bortz gave us some very good advice, "If you're smart, you can live a long time, because now we know it's not genes and not doctors. It's how you live your life."
"We are a wonderful ensemble of genes. All these genes are little electric switches that must be tuned. The tuning of it is exercise. When you're fit, everything tunes correctly."

After more than twenty years in the fitness business, working with hundreds of people who were looking for the best exercises to lose love handles and belly fat, I thought I had this exercise weight loss strategy pretty much figured out.

Then I discovered Dr. Al Sears and soon found out there was more to learn.

One of Mark Twain's more insightful quotes is,

"Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits."

With that in mind I am taking up the challenge to help you reform yours.

If you happen to be one of those with good intentions about doing more heart exercise but just haven't got a round to it this program is especially for you.

Some of you have been following Phyllis Diller's approach to fitness which is, "My idea of exercise is a good brisk sit.""
